Goal Setting

Goal Setting

“Begin with the end in mind” - Stephen R. Covey

The purpose of a goal is simply to clarify what YOU want to accomplish. Goals give you a direction and a destination. They act as a guide to where you ultimately want to be in life and focus how to use your time.

In the absence of goals, we are more likely to use our time in ways that are unproductive. For example, do you REALLY have a goal to spend hours getting the high score on flappy bird? What have you actually accomplished when you are done? How does this time spent contribute to who you want to be as a person?
Setting goals is easy. However, different methods of goal setting work better for different individuals. You have to find what works for you. Included here are three worksheets that help clarify the goal setting process. The first is the SMART goal method. The second is a looser format in which you simply identify your long-term and short-term goals. The final worksheet separates your goals into categories. Regardless of which method you decide to use, the two most important elements to include in a goal are: what do you want to accomplish? and when do you want it to be done by?

Tips for making goal-setting part of your life
  •       Begin each year, month, week, and day by identifying what you want to accomplish. Make this part of your routine.
  •       Place goals where you can see them. Consider purchasing a whiteboard to hang in your room and create the goal template that works best for you.
  •       Tell people about your goals. If others know you are working towards something, you are more likely to persevere.
  •       Set goals for all aspects of your life. Consider making goal categories including physical, social, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, etc.
  •    Schedule a time to sit quietly and reflect on what you want in life. Life is filled with constant distraction from TVs, phones, friends, music, work school, etc. Setting aside time to be alone with your thoughts will help you clarify your inner desires.
